Individual Retirement Account – Qualified Charitable Distribution Gifts

Donors 70 ½ or older may make Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) to nonprofits for Give to Lincoln Day. IRA owners must complete and return a 2026 Give to Lincoln Day IRA Distribution Form to the Lincoln Community Foundation by May 15. Email the form to Rhonda Page, rhondap@lcf.org, or mail it to:

Lincoln Community Foundation

Attn: Rhonda Page

215 Centennial Mall South Ste 100

Lincoln, NE 68508

‍ ‍

The IRA owner must also contact their IRA administrator and initiate their QCD donation to the Lincoln Community Foundation. In order for your gift to count toward Give to Lincoln Day, the Foundation needs to receive your distribution by May 28. Please allow several weeks for processing. Each donation to a nonprofit must be $100 or more, and a 2.9% transaction fee applies.

Members of the Foundation are available to answer your questions, help with paperwork, and collaborate with your financial advisor, accountant, or attorney. Just call (402) 474-2345 and ask for the Charitable IRA Development Team. Here is a list of frequently asked questions about QCD donations:

Who can make a QCD? Individuals 70½ and older may transfer up to $100,000 annually from an IRA to public charities like the Lincoln Community Foundation without incurring Federal or State tax.

How will my gift get to Abendmusik? The Foundation will present Abendmusik a check at the end of the campaign that includes your Give to Lincoln Day donation. Abendmusik will also get a list of contributors showing your individual gift.

Do QCDs add to my income? QCD charitable rollover payments apply toward Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) and are not added to your taxable income.

Are there tax benefits to donating through a QCD? Yes!

  • Tax Savers: QCDIRA rollover amounts are not included in your gross income calculations so you may save on Federal income and Social Security income taxes, avoid the Medicare tax, and enjoy other tax savings.

  • Nonitemizers: If you do not itemize deductions and therefore would not otherwise receive a tax deduction for your charitable gift, a QCD gift allows you to enjoy an equivalent tax benefit without requiring you to itemize.

  • Generous Donors: A QCD gift from your IRA is not subject to the annual ceiling on charitable deductions or the phaseouts of deductions for high earners.

You are encouraged to consult with your accountant, attorney, orfinancial advisor when you make a charitable gift directly from your IRA.
